2011 Year of the Rabbit

2011 Year of the Rabbit With 2011 well underway here at Sandihurst in New Zealand the 2011 Chinese Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year is about to start on February 3rd, bringing the 'Year of the Rabbit' and perhaps a calmer year all round, if that is possible? It is the most important traditional festival in China and a time for families to be together. Celebrations include having annual reunion dinner on Chinese New Year's Eve, setting firecrackers, giving lucky money to children, ringing the New Year bell, sending Chinese New Year greetings, dragon and lion dancing, and Niu Yangge (traditional dance in northern China).
It is a perfect time to think a bit about Chinese food and pairing wines with the broad array of dishes available. On Hennie's last trip to Hong Kong he was impressed with the sheer spectrum of culinary creations and how well they match with some of the wines we produce here at Sandihurst. Notably our 'off- dry' 2006 Riesling and 2008 Pinot Gris seemed to be the most versatile, but our 2007 Pinot Noir also came out tops matching brilliantly with many of the dishes.  The trick is to tease out the elements that work well together.
