August at Sandihurst…

riesling 2010 005 Into August now, possibly only another 6 weeks from bud burst. Hard to believe (its still cold here) but it certainly lighter in the mornings and evening now. Heres a quick update of things around Sandihurst. Out in the vineyard its cold and July was quite a wet month. Pruning is the major task at hand and looks on track to be completed in time for budburst (approximately mid September in Waipara, early October for Central Otago) . In the winery the 2010 Pinot Noirs are now in barrel (fantastic colour this year) and are receiving weekly topping up. As the weather warms we will see the start of Malolactic ferment in each barrel at the wine temperature rises. The current cellar temperature is around 10C which is just too cold for the bugs to start work. For the white wines we have our 2010 Rieslings in tank and these are currently being protein stablised with the addition of Bentonite clay. No need for alarm this is standard procedure for 99% of the worlds white wines. Our other white, Pinot Gris, is in old French oak barrels and these are receiving a bi-weekly stir to resuspend the lees and help create some weight and texture in the wine. Both of these wine will be bottled towards the end of this year.
