Baryshnikov in White Nights

I was recently sent a You Tube link of a performance by the Companhia National de Bailado (National Ballet of Portugal), a company I used to dance for many, many moons ago. This video is totally non wine related but true to our Friday clips, I thought worth sharing as it reminded me of Portugal. White Nights (1985) starred Gregory Hines and Mikhail Baryshnikov, amongst others. At the time it was filmed, Baryshnikov could not return to Russia, following his defection to Canada in 1974, so footage that was supposed to be at the Kirov Theatre in St Petersburg, Russia (then Leningrad), was actually filmed in Lisbon, Portugal at the Teatro San Carlos. Such a stunning theatre and who better to show it off than Baryshnikov. The Theatre is actually made for opera with a rake that makes dancers tremble in the wings wondering if they will keep their balance but for filming with Baryshnikov they built a false top to make it level!
