The False Friend…

Pinot Gris or, "The False Friend", as Olivier Humbrecht labelled it when he came to New Zealand to speak at the Aromatics symposium a couple of years ago. Certainly the white grape-du-jour of New Zealand in the past few years with a huge increase in plantings and subsequent new wines on the market. However we seem to be heading down the same path that we have with Riesling in that its very difficult to know exactly what style of Gris you are getting - from the neutral lightweight Grigio style to the weighty oily Alsace model, and all the while the sugar level could be all over the place. Doesnt seem to stop its popularity though with the punters. Shame Riesling doesnt have the same appeal with the public. For the record our current Pinot Gris 2008  is a highly aromatic medium sweet wine with a high level of weight and texture. Definitely not an Italian Grigio imitator. Top 5 New Zealand Pinot Gris wines ? Tough choice... My own bias aside I would say there are but a few standouts in a sea of mediocrity... Seresin and Prophets Rock are two superb examples Ive had recently. But then its not a wine I drink regularly. Can you add to the list?
